TRAINING AND PRACTICE IN VOICE, MANTRA, RAGA AND IMPROVISATION

AN INSTRUMENT WE ALREADY CARRY

The voice is a vital channel for yoga teachers. It carries the instructions, the stories, the pauses and the quality of attention from which we speak. Most trainings attend carefully to body, breath, sequencing and philosophy. The voice itself is often overlooked.

Yoga of the Voice begins here.

Through singing, listening, mantra, raga and improvisation, the voice becomes part of the practice: a way of meeting sensation, uncertainty, creativity and one another.

The voice carries our entire life story.

It remembers where we come from: how sound lived in our homes, how freely we were allowed to express ourselves, when we felt heard and when we learnt to become quiet. The voice carries more than sound. We meet history, habit, imagination and possibility. Some of this can be heard. Some is felt before a word is spoken.

We sing. We listen. We improvise. We return to a phrase until its shape begins to change us.

At a certain point, communication becomes transmission.

THE PRACTICE

We sing. We listen. We improvise. We return to a phrase until its shape begins to change us. Mantra gathers body, breath, mind and voice through repetition. Raga invites us into mood, tone and the subtle life of a note. Improvisation asks us to respond before certainty arrives. Together, these practices help the voice become less something we manage and more a place we inhabit.

TEACHING THROUGH THE VOICE

A teacher’s voice shapes the room. Tone, pace, rhythm and silence all affect how a practice is received. Yoga of the Voice supports teachers to hear themselves more clearly and to speak from a place that is grounded in the body and connected to what they are sharing.

The aim is not a fixed “teaching voice”. It is greater range, responsiveness and trust. Words begin to arise from the practice rather than sit on top of it. At a certain point, communication becomes transmission.

LIV: a little about my work

I came to this work through music. Over time, I realised I was also studying how people listen, withhold, respond and come into relationship.

My background in Hindustani classical music, jazz, composition and music therapy now meets my yoga
practice in Yoga of the Voice. These traditions have shaped a way of working that is disciplined and
intuitive, devotional and creative.

The voice is the practice. Relationship is what it reveals.

The voice carries every part of a teacher training into the room, yet it is rarely given a place of its own. Yoga of the Voice can be hosted as a complete 30-hour training or integrated into a wider teacher education programme. The work supports vocal awareness, teaching presence, creativity, deep listening and the capacity to respond to a room.

Testimonials

"Liv’s voice is pure magic. I was invited on a whim and came with no expectations, yet was moved to tears during our chants and left heart full and full of inspiration. I’ve since begun singing and won't soon forget this experience."

Joanne de Jongh, Nurse/Aspiring Artist

"Liv creates a wonderfully safe, sacred space where we use our voices in harmony with each other to connect and it's a bodily experience but I believe it's more than that - it's a spiritual blessing. A very deep and relaxing time. Very beautiful."

Hannah, Former Priest, Chef

"Olivia's voice yoga was fantastic. I found it a profoundly simple way to connect and resonate using the voice. Olivia makes access to this ancient art easy and enjoyable for all... no need to be able to sing. She leads it beautifully."
